The class 24 locomotives were designed for passenger train service on flat country stretches. They were
used also as universal machines on the long stretches of east and west Prussia. There they received the
popular nick-name 'Steppen Pferd' (Steppe Horse). Hofmann and Schichau divided production of the first
series of 37 locos, with another 58 locos being delivered by several other manufacturers up to 1938.
Borsig built two locos, 24 069 & 070 in 1931 with 25 kp/cm^2 medium pressure boilers. Both were converted
in 1952 to the standard design. The class 24 developed in parallel to the class 64 tank with many parts
being interchangeable. After 1948 the railways still had 33 locomotives in stock. In August 1966 the last
24 class as 24 067 was decommissioned by the German Federal Armed Forces at Rheydt.
